  • Windows 10 tips and tricks:

If you have been using Windows 10 for some time, then you already know that Microsoft has included many new features in it.  You will be familiar with other major changes like new Start Menu, Cortana (Vice Assistant), Edge Browser (instead of Internet Explorer).

However, here are some new features that most people are not talking about, but they are equally important.  While this is not a secret, they do not appear, and you may have never seen them.

These are some of my favorite but less well-known features of Windows 10, which you should know for a better overall experience of Windows 10.

Here is a list of the seven most useful, productive, hidden but useful features.

 1) Print to PDF:

Windows has added the ability to create PDFs from many types of files.  Now you do not need to download any third-party software to create a PDF from a file.

By the way, the print function is enabled by default.  If it is not enabled, go to Control Panel> Programs and Features, and enable Microsoft Print to PDF.

To make a document file a PDF, give print command and select Microsoft Print to PDF Printer.

 2) Analyze Disk Space:

If you want to know which apps or files are taking the most space in a partition of hard disk, then in Windows 10 you can see it without any software.

Now, Microsoft has built its own storage analyzer.  Go to Start Menu -> Settings -> Storage section.  From here, select the drive to analyze.  Soon, there will be a list of file types in front of you, in which the content is being taken based on the category.

However, this tool is not so powerful as the previous posts had information about some "Great Free Tools for Analyzing Disk Space".  But it is quite easy and sufficient for a common user.

 3) Change the Location of Apps, Documents, Music, and Videos:
 change-the-location-of-apps-documents-music-and-videos-windows-10-useful-features-settings
By default, all programs in Windows are installed in the C drive, with documents, music and videos also in the C drive.  But if Windows gets corrupted and has to be formatted, then all the data on the C drive will be destroyed.  That is why some users like this data on other drives.  If you are among them, Microsoft has made it easy to change the drive for all of them.

For this, just go to Settings -> System -> Storage, and select Drive for Apps, Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos.

 4) Background App Manager:
By default, all apps in Windows 10 run in the background.  But you can control which apps should run in the background.

To see which apps are running in the background, go to Settings> Privacy> Background apps.  Here you can change (On / Off) settings for each app.

 5) Smart Way To Take Screenshots In Windows 10:
Taking a screenshot can be very useful, and in Windows 10, you can take a screenshot smartly.

 i) Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots:

This is a built-in tool in Windows 10 to take screenshots.  By far the easiest way to take screenshots in Windows 10 is to use the Snipping Tool.

Type Snipping in the Start menu to open the Snipping Tool and you will see the Snipping Tool.  Or go to Start -> All Apps -> Windows Accessories -> Snipping Tool.

 Capture a Snip / Screenshot:

Click on the New button in the Snipping Tool or press Ctrl + PrtScn keys.

Now select the area for which the screenshot is to be taken.

 Save it

 Snipping Tool Timer–

You can also take screenshots with a delay of 1 to 5 seconds in the Snipping Tool.  For this, click on the Delay button and select 1 to 5 seconds.

 ii) Improved Print Screen:

In Windows, you are well acquainted with the Print Screen.  But in Windows 10, its capacity has been increased further.

If multiple windows are open on the screen and all you have to do is take a screenshot of the top window, then press Alt + PrtScn.  This will only take a screenshot of the top window and not the entire desktop.

If you want to take many screenshots, it is better to save the screenshot one by one, save the screenshot directly in the folder.  When you press Windows Key + PrtScn in Windows 10, the screenshot is saved directly in the screenshots folder of Picture Library.  This will save you a lot of time and effort.

 6) Quick Navigation Between Apps Using Alphabet Screen:

This is actually a very handy feature.  Suppose your PC has many programs and apps installed and your Start Menu is filled with it.  At such times it will take a lot of time to find an app in the Start menu.  To help the user, Microsoft has provided a secret alphabet screen in the Windows 10 Start Menu.

Open the Start Menu and open the Apps screen.

Now clicking on any alphabet, you will see a list of the headers of the apps.

Clicking on a letter will show all the apps that start with this letter.

 7) Offline Maps:
 windows-offline-maps-1-windows-10-useful-features-settings
Within the application settings, there is an option to download the map for offline use.  This is a very useful feature when you are going to some unknown place and there is no internet access.  If you download the map before going to such a place, it will be very easy for you.  You can easily download the map in Windows 10.

To Download Offline Maps in Windows 10 -

Go to Setting -> System -> Offline map.

Click on the + Download maps button.

Now select the state and download its map.

  • Quickly Compare two windows files and folders and merge them:

When many people are copying a single file, controlling multiple versions of these files is not easy.  Finding out what changes have been made, what is not, and merging them all together can be a huge headache.

Or when you keep your data at multiple locations or multiple users are working, it becomes a difficult task to find the latest changed file or folder and then merge two updated files into one.

But Ficker Not!  IT search has brought you a free solution to this problem.

 WinMerge:
WinMerge is a powerful, free and open-source utility for Windows, helping you to compare and merge two files or folders.

 let's take a look.

WinMerge is a visual display and merge tool for the differentiation of two files or folders for Windows.  This is a highly useful tool for merging these changes to determine what changes have been made between file versions.

WinMerge supports Unicode, Flexible Syntax Color Editor, Visual SourceChef Integration, and Windows Shell Integration.  It highlights the side-by-side line defines and defines inside lines.  The file map shows overall file differences on a location page.

When you compare two files or folders, the result is displayed in the WinMerge window.  The visual displays and functions of the WinMerge window are designed to help you see differences between targets, and you can merge these selected defenses if you want.

In File Comparison: WinMerge shows differences between lines.  Built-in text editors provide syntax highlighting for many programming languages and other file formats.

In Folder Comparison: WinMerge Indicates different types of deference between files included in folders.

 Compare Two Files in WinMerge:
Select two files in Windows Explorer and drag them to the WinMerge shortcut on your desktop.

WinMerge has another option that adds a WinMerge shortcut to the context menu.  When you right-click and select two files or folders in Windows Explorer, you will see the option of WinMerge.

After this, the File Compare window will open.

The File Compare window makes it easy to see the differences between the lines of your files.  It has special functions for merging individual lines from one file to another and also has basic editing capabilities for more detail planning within lines.  Let's look at these basic features of File Compare window -

At the bottom right corner of the window, the status bar tells you how many differences WinMerge has detected.

The location pane indicates where the differences are in the files.  This is useful for working with long files, where you cannot see all the differences once in the file pan.

Differences are highlighted with the golden background color in the file panes.  In this comparison, the first difference is a block of two lines;  The second is of a line of differential end.

Within the differences, WinMerge highlights the text that separates the lines.  By default, various words are highlighted.  You can highlight character level changes to see more details.

 Merging differences in files:
You can merge differences at two levels in the File Compare window:

 Line-level differences:
As we have seen, the difference consists of one or more lines.  Using WinMerge's merge functions, you can copy the selected content on one side and paste it on the other side.  For example, click on the Copy Right and Advance button.

 Note these changes:

The first difference will run: the lines are now the same and there is no color difference.

WinMerge automatically skips the same lines and moves to the next difference.

The status bar indicates that only one difference is left.

After finishing merging, you can click on File → Save to save the changes on both sides.  Or, to save just one side, click File → Save Left or File → Save.

 Comparing Folders:
In WinMerge, in addition to comparing files, you can also compare the contents of folders.

WinMerge describes which files are different, and provides functions to merge files between folders.

 The Folder Compare window
When you bring two folders into WinMerge as a file, the Folder Compare window will open.

Folder Compare lists the window folders and subfolders that are found in the target folders.  The file or subfolder in each row is compared.

The columns here tell you that the right and left items in each row are the same, different, or exist only on one side.  Asterisk in either right and left date highlights the more recent date.  The File Name column provides visual cues for each type of file, such as text or binary files, and how the two sides differ.  Icons are also used to mark only files and folders that are found on one side only.

Columns are sorted.  By default, the row is sorted by file name.

The Folder Compare window supports common operations on files, such as editing, copying, deleting, moving, and renaming.  You can use these file operations and the WinMerge function to merge the contents of folders.

  •  Open Accidentally Cloned Folders and Programs with just a Shortcut Key:

This has happened to all of us - we closed a folder or a program ahead of time and then later we realized that it was still going to work.  There is no option to reopen closed folders or apps in Windows OS.  That means, if you have set a long path to open a folder in Windows and closed the window by mistake, you cannot automatically reopen that folder or window.

In most modern browsers, we can easily restore the last closed tab with the Ctrl + Shift + T hotkey.  This feature is very useful in the browser when you accidentally close a tab you were working on.

But if you accidentally closed the browser, you will be surprised that there is no way to reopen it again.

Fortunately, there is an app that can do just that.

Today, IT search has brought you a free program that remembers recently closed folders and applications, so that you can restore them in the same order with the two hotkeys in the order in which they were closed.

 UndoClose:
UndoClose software is very easy to use.  It does not have a single compact option.  Therefore, it will not take more than a few seconds to understand how it works.

In UndoClose you can open recently closed apps and folders using keyboard shortcuts without any limitation.

UndoClose is a portable app that works well only on Windows 7.  You can also use it on Windows 10, but I have seen that this program does not open the close folder in Windows 10 for the last time.

 Run UndoClose Program:
Click the link above and download the zip file.  Extract the compressed zip file.

 Run the file UndoClose.exe.

It is a portable program and you do not need to install it.

You can copy this program to your USB drive and run it directly from the pen drive on any PC.

When this software runs, you will see an UndoClose icon in the system tray.

Click this icon and open the window of UndoClose.

Here you can see two major categories of Recently Closed Folders and Recently Closed Apps.  This app will automatically start remembering the apps and folders whose windows you close and will save this list in these sections.

Like you will be using your PC, the recently closed folders will appear in the Recently Closed Folders section and the recently closed programs in the Recently Closed Apps section.

How to Reopen Last Closed Folders or Application:

Recently there are two major categories of Closed Apps.  This app will automatically start remembering the apps and folders whose windows you close and will save this list in these sections.

To reopen the last program you have closed, press Ctrl + Shift + A shortcut key.

 Change Keyboard Shortcuts:
To change the default keyboard shortcut, click on that field and type in your new shortcut.

But remember that Windows default keyboard shortcuts (such as Ctrl + A or Ctrl + C), which are already defined will not work.  After this, click on the Change button to save.

As you continue to press these hotkeys, it will keep reopening the last closed folder or app in order.

 Run As Startup:
 Run in status:

If you want to run this program automatically every time during your PC startup, check the Run on system startup option.

  •  To quickly open a folder, create a virtual drive in My Computer:

Suppose you are working on a project, and you have saved the folder of this project on your drive.  Now every time you have to go to many folders and sub-folders to open this folder.

Now if you have many such folders, which you open again and again, then a lot of your time is wasted in it.

So, instead of browsing so many folders, why don't you create drives for these folders?  The folders that you always find have many advantages to create a drive named after them.  For example, you can easily access them from My Computer and that too with a single click.  This will save both your time and effort.

If you are using some folders often, then in this post I will tell you about a portable utility that you can easily create a drive of any folder.

Make Virtual Drives for Dropbox, Google Drive:
Today cloud storage has become a part of our computing.  We can store our data on cloud storage like Dropbox and Google Drive so that we can access it whenever and wherever we want.

How would you be able to access the folder of cloud storage such as Dropbox or Google Drive as a virtual drive from My Computer?

Visual Subst is a better and easier way to create cloud storage virtual drives.

 First, select the drive letter.

Now select the path of your Google Drive account.  In Windows 7, this is usually C: \ Users \ Username \ Google Drive, where your PC's username will be in place of Username.

Or first, open Google Drive and copy its path and paste it here.

 5- Visual Subst
Make sure that you have selected the checkbox of "Apply virtual drives on Windows startup".
